Scholer Immigrations To North America

Home

Information is known for ten Scholer immigrations to North America from Zunzgen, Switzerland.  The earliest was in 1852, the latest in 1911.  These families are related, and share common ancestors, Johannes Scholer, (1728–1812) who married Elisabeth Wuerz (1728–1788).  Both were born in Zunzgen; they were married in January 1749, in the church in Tenniken.

In 1852, widow Salome Bossard Scholer and four grown children (John Henry, Jacob, John and Salome Scholer) arrived in New Orleans after an ocean crossing of seventy days.  They settled principally in Iowa.

In 1853, Henry Rieder and brother George Rieder and George’s newlywed wife, Verena/Fanny Scholer settled first in Ohio and later in Jay County, Indiana.  Still later, Henry and George went to Nebraska, however Henry soon after settled finally in Grundy County, Tennessee.

In 1855, John Scholer and wife, Elizabeth Bohni, and their two sons, John and Henry, arrived in New York aboard the H. A. Miller and settled in Jay County, Indiana.  In 1870, son John and his family moved to Grundy County, Tennessee and joined the Swiss Colony at Gruetli.

In 1880, Adolf Scholer came to America (probably New York City) and settled in Paterson, New Jersey.

In 1881, Heinrich/Henry Scholer (brother of Adolf) came to America and settled in New York City.

In 1885, John Henry Scholer came to America and settled first in Yonkers, Westchester County, New York and after 1920 settled in Sussex, New Jersey to work in a silk mill.

In 1895, Carl Martin Scholer came to America (probably New York City) and settled in Paterson, New Jersey.

In 1897, Herman Scholer (brother of Carl Martin Scholer) came first to Indiana, and after marrying Mahala Gose in Indiana, located in Coles County, Illinois.

In 1905, Karl Sterzer and his wife, Maria Scholer (daughter of Friedrich Scholer), came first to Akron, Ohio, and later settled in Luseland, Saskatchewan, Canada.

In 1911, Maria’s brothers, Paul and Traugott Scholer brought their families as well as their mother to Luseland, Saskatchewan, Canada.
